Male v/s Female Dogs – Preferences & Differences

There are some differences of male v/s female dogs and they can be seen in their behavior, training and other aspects of daily pet life. If you want to get a dog you are not sure about the gender, there are some things that can make you reach a decision easier.

Preferences & Differences Of Male v/s Female Dogs

General Traits

Male Dogs

Males can be easier to deal with, sometimes more affectionate, can have territorial manifestations and they can cause problems if they are not castrated.

Female Dogs

Females are more independent, can have a smaller size, can be more mature in behavior and more reticent than males. In some cases, females can prove to be more intelligent.

Temperament

Some temperament characteristics can be seen in one gender more than the other. Males may seek more attention and are more dependent on their human masters. Female tend to be less focused on human companion, but this does not mean they are not capable of the same love for humans like males. But, from time to time, they feel the need to be on their own.

If you like cat behavior, you will surely like the temperament of female dogs, because it is usually similar. If you are a cat person, you may not enjoy the company of a male dog too much.

Neutering

While male dogs are neutered, females are the subject of spaying. Neutering involves the removal of testicles and spaying involves the elimination of the uterus and the ovaries. Non-neutered dogs can become very aggressive. If females that are in the breeding season are seen, male dogs can manifest uncontrolled sexual behavior. With neutering and spaying, you can avoid problems of temperament and unwanted offspring, but you can also improve general health. There are benefits for both genders, as problems like mammal gland tumors and prostate diseases are avoided.

Training

The widely known idea is that female dogs can be less distracted and this can make them to focus better on a training session. Males instead are known to play the role of the eternal child and they can hardly focus when they need to work seriously. Despite these facts, in dog competitions, male have been better than females all the time. This can be justified by the need of males to gain the attention of their masters and to please them as much as they can.

Are Male Dogs or Female Dogs More Prone to Fighting

According to experts, if you already have a dog, but you want to have one more, the best recommendation may be to get one of the opposite gender. Having two females can be the worst case, because they can have difficulties sharing the same space. This behavior has origins in the reproductive instincts of female dogs.

Most of the characteristics of male v/s female dogs are general and theoretical. In reality, the difference may not be as clear as it may seem on paper. Dominance levels can be different for each dog, regardless of its gender. Neutering and spaying can solve some of the issues.
